Discovery Exercise – Resource Libraries

Resource library refers to citation management and social bookmarking tools. Citation management and social bookmarking can help organize an unruly resource library. These tools provide an online location to organize and keep your scholarship, research, and other web resources until you need them. These tools also allow individuals and groups to manage resources in flexible ways.

Option 1: Organize Resources Using a Citation Management System

  1. If you have not already selected a Citation Management tool or resource, go to #EmTechWIKI Discover page, select the appropriate module, and then a Citation Management tool or resource you would like to explore by choosing Resource Libraries in the Category field, you may also use the Keywords/Tags field. You will have to create an account on your chosen platform unless you already have one. Each listed tool has a free service as well as premium options.
  2. Find a few articles on an area that interests you (e.g., journal articles, news articles, etc.).
  3. Begin to build a resource library using the tool you selected and add the articles.
  4. Upload a copy of your artifact to your ePortfolio.
  5. Reflect on how this tool might impact your life (e.g., school, work, etc.).
    • How can this tool help you stay organized in your courses or life?
    • How might this tool help you with collaboration on work with other students or colleagues?
    • Post this to the discussion board for the module you are working on.
  6. If you are enrolled in the MOOC, remember to return to “Activities and Discussion Prompt” to complete that Module. Here is a link back to #EmTechMOOC in Coursera.

Option 2: Build a Social Bookmark Library

If you have not already selected a Social Bookmark tool or resource to explore, go to #EmTechWIKI Discover page, select the appropriate module, then a Social Bookmark tool or resource you would like to explore by choosing Resource Libraries in the Category field. You may also use the Keywords/Tags field.
  2. Using EmTechWIKI, select a social bookmarking tool. Create an account in your selected tool.
  3. Explore the site options. Review bookmarks collections created by other users. How are tags used to categorize the referenced websites or resources?
  4. Select a topic of interest to you from work, school, etc. Begin to gather a collection of your own bookmarks.
  5. Embed the example you created as an artifact in your ePortfolio.
  6. Reflect on how this tool might impact your life (e.g., school, work, etc.).
    • How will this impact you? How might you use this to engage with others sharing your same interests?
  7. If you are enrolled in the MOOC, remember to return to “Activities and Discussion Prompt” to complete that Module. Here is a link back to #EmTechMOOC in Coursera.
